Have a patient on long term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment? Did you know that the FDA has actually issued a safety announcement surrounding long term PPI therapy and its association with hypomagnesaemia?
This side effect is rare but can happen. Hypomagnesaemia can lead to tremor, muscle cramps, and even arrhythmias! Therefore, this is not something that should be taken lightly.
I recommend to all my patients on PPIs that they should take 500mg of magnesium nightly before bed. Magnesium is safe and well tolerated, cheap, plus most patients comment on more restful sleep and the resolution of muscle cramps!

Thank you for the clinical pearls. I beleive we are so pushed for time that we overlook certain things such as this.
You are very welcome. And you are very right… The hustle and bustle of day to day work really restricts our time to learn new things. I hope the pearls help 🙂
