Did you know that Vitamin D is vital for the absorption and utilization of iron/ferritin?

The higher the levels of Vitamin D, the LOWER the hepcidin will be, which is a peptide that regulates iron absorption.

Low Vitamin D levels will allow for elevated hepcidin, which will impair iron & ferritin metabolism which could lead to anemia.

Higher levels of Vitamin D will IMPROVE iron & ferritin absorption and use by reducing hepcidin, thus leading to improved iron & ferritin levels which could improve and even prevent anemia.

So, if you have a patient on iron supplementation, you better be sure that their Vitamin D levels are optimal as well!
