The gut is often referred to as the “second brain” because of the complex neural network that controls its function. In functional medicine, optimizing gut health is crucial for overall well-being and the prevention of chronic disease, which is discussed in detail in our Foundational Functional Medicine Course.

One way to support gut health is by consuming a diverse range of plant-based foods. Plant-based foods are high in fiber, which support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Aim for at least 30 different plant-based foods each week, including a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.

Another key factor in gut health is the balance of gut bacteria. An imbalance, known as dysbiosis, can lead to inflammation and chronic disease. Factors that can contribute to dysbiosis include a diet high in sugar and processed foods, chronic stress, and the overuse of antibiotics. Consider incorporating probiotics and prebiotics into your diet, as they can help support a healthy balance of gut bacteria.

Lastly, it’s important to identify and address any underlying gut issues that may be impacting your patient’s health. Testing for food sensitivities, infections, and imbalances in gut bacteria can provide valuable insights and help guide personalized treatment.

By prioritizing gut health, we can support the body’s natural ability to heal and prevent chronic disease! It is a critical aspect of optimal health and well-being!

  1. Gut health is very important. Most of our gut problems stem from what we eat, how much we eat, and how we eliminate unwanted byproducts. If you pay attention to your gut, you can trace what is upsetting your gut. Just like we do all the time in our assessments, what is the history of the upset. What did you eat recently, anything new in your diet, how much of it, when was the last BM etc. Any pain, bloating etc. If we do not answer these questions, we may continue making the same mistakes that upset our guts. When answers to these questions are not helpful, it’s time for orthodox diagnostics and treatment.
