Motivational Monday #11 Develop a Habit for Lifelong Learning

The most valuable asset you have is the thirst for knowledge and the ability to learn how to learn. – Mark Cuban

There’s a very limited window of people who can make it as an entrepreneur. Many adore the idea of becoming their own boss and having complete control over their workflow and schedules. However, these people quickly find out that there’s a lot more to running a business above and beyond the demands of a traditional job.

So what is it about starting your own business that makes it so difficult? There are a lot of solid potential reasons. However, if I had to point to one, it would probably be the fact that you’re never really quite done knowing what you need to know to succeed.

When I started my nurse practitioner business, I was eventually able to get things going, generate some revenue, and even retain some repeat clients. However, what I quickly found out was that this only works to a certain capacity. Eventually, if I wanted to grow my business and expand beyond what we were currently offering, it would require venturing into new skills and knowledge that I currently don’t have.

… And I’m quite sure that it doesn’t end there! People who have grown their businesses from millions to billions in revenue clearly know a few things or two that the rest of us don’t.

The only way that any of that is ever going to be possible is for you to always be thirsty for more knowledge. You’re going to have to seek out what you don’t know and be comfortable admitting that you don’t have all of the right answers. There will always be something to learn, and it’s important to recognize this now will be a lifelong endeavor.

I personally believe that the best way to do this is to start by developing the right habits. Start small by learning something new each day. It could be reading a chapter of a book, watching an interesting video on YouTube, listening to a good podcast, etc. Regardless of how you do it, I’d highly encourage you to pick any topic that you’re curious about and devote yourself to learning something new about it. You’ll never run out of things you can explore.
